Toddler Tips & FAQs: Life with 18–24 Month Olds

The toddler years are full of discovery, big feelings, and even bigger growth. At Mama Meet Up, parents of 18–24 month olds often ask the same questions — here are a few community favorites.

🚽 When should I start potty training?

Parents shared that readiness matters more than age. Signs include staying dry for longer stretches, showing interest in the bathroom, or hiding when they need to go. Some families start introducing the potty gently around 18–24 months, while others wait longer — both are normal! Many of our parents recommend the book “Oh Crap! Potty Training” and we have a couple copies we pass around the group. Attending an event with your little potty in tow is a very normal sight in our group!

🏃 Where are the best places to play indoors?

Our top two favorites are Indigo Play and Cheeky Monkey Playroom. They’re toddler-friendly, safe, and perfect for burning energy on hot (or rainy) Texas days. Our families with littles this age prefer Indigo Play because it has many soft areas, and is less overwhelming for our more sensitive friends. However, if you have a wild child, Cheeky Monkey might be a better fit. We are really excited about a new play room, Little Leaps, coming to Crystal Falls and Lakeline because it’s close in our community, will offer memberships and will be geared towards littles 0 – 6.

🤝 How do we encourage sharing?

At this age, “mine!” is common. Parents from our group recommend modeling kind words, keeping group play short, and celebrating even tiny moments of cooperation. Play dates in familiar settings also help toddlers practice playing side by side before true sharing develops. We offer lots of opportunities to play with littles of all ages, so it can be great to have extra practice sharing.

💬 What about tantrums and temperament?

Parents lean on the group to swap stories and strategies — from offering choices to validating big feelings. Just knowing others are going through it too makes a huge difference.

Together, we remind each other: toddlerhood is a team sport! 💕
